SEND Teaching Assistant – Primary and Secondary
Job Description
Make a Difference in the Lives of Children with Additional Needs
Are you a caring, patient, and dedicated individual with a passion for supporting children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)?
We are currently recruiting enthusiastic and reliable SEND Teaching Assistants to work across a range of welcoming and inclusive primary and secondary school settings in the Ashton-under-Lyne area.
This is a fantastic opportunity for individuals who are passionate about helping pupils overcome barriers to learning, develop their confidence, and achieve their full potential. Whether you are an experienced SEND Teaching Assistant or have transferable experience working with children and young people, we would love to hear from you.
About the Role
As a SEND Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with class teachers, the SENCO, and other members of the school team to provide tailored support for pupils with a range of additional needs. These may include autism (ASC), ADHD, speech and language difficulties, social, emotional and mental health needs, and learning difficulties.
Depending on the school and individual pupils, you may provide one-to-one support, work with small groups, or assist within the wider classroom to ensure that every pupil feels safe, included, and supported.
Assignments may be day-to-day, short-term, or long-term, offering flexibility to suit your availability and preferences, with the potential for a permanent contract.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide one-to-one and small-group support to pupils with SEND, adapting your approach to meet their individual needs.
- Support pupils' learning, communication, social development, and independence.
- Assist teachers in delivering accessible and engaging lessons tailored to pupils' abilities.
- Help implement individual education plans, support strategies, and recommendations from the wider school team.
- Encourage positive behaviour, emotional regulation, and engagement in learning.
- Create a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment where pupils feel valued.
- Support pupils with transitions, routines, and daily classroom activities.
- Build positive relationships with pupils, staff, and other professionals to promote pupil wellbeing and progress.
Requirements
- Previous experience working with children or young people, ideally within a school, SEND, care, or support setting.
- A patient, empathetic, and adaptable approach, with a genuine passion for supporting pupils with additional needs.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- The ability to remain calm, encouraging, and consistent when supporting pupils with behavioural or emotional needs.
- A commitment to safeguarding, inclusion, and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
- A valid DBS certificate on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain the necessary checks.
- Relevant qualifications, such as a Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification, SEND training, or equivalent experience, are advantageous but not essential.
